The 37th Day After

A few people lately asked me, what does high eye pressure feels like...
I am not that good in the describing, so I would rather rely on Jack London's "The Sea Wolf" on that, but here is the poem that I wrote a couple weeks after the only instance in my life, when I cried from a physical pain. It was a few days after a major eye surgery, when my eye pressure jumped 35 marks above its acceptable point.

I'm not a pessimist, just honest...
So, if it happens one more time,
I know, it's hard for you, but promise
To shoot me - I'm ashamed to cry.
I can't go over this again -
Instead of stockings and high heels,
Whine from insufferable pain
And beg the doctor for the pills.
With all respect to those, who choose
To fight for life, no matter how,
I'd say, we finally all lose
And sometimes 'then' is worse than 'now'.
I'm not a hero, I admit,
And just repeat what once was said,
That it is better die on feet,
To living on the knees instead.
